Pension Credit tops up low incomes β and unlocks a raft of other benefits
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age whose weekly income falls below the minimum thresholds. Crucially, receiving it also unlocks free TV licences (if over 75), Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, cold weather payments, and the Warm Home Discount β the combined value can be worth several thousand pounds a year.
Bottom line: Even a small Pension Credit award β as little as Β£1 a week β qualifies you for all the associated passported benefits, so it is nearly always worth applying.
What you will need before you apply
Gather these before you start β the phone call or online form takes around 20 minutes with everything to hand:
- National Insurance number
- Bank or building society details (for payment)
- Pension and income details β State Pension, private pensions, employment income if any
- Savings and investments β current balances; savings above Β£10,000 reduce your award
- Housing costs β rent amount, mortgage details if applicable
- Your partner's information if you are applying as a couple
Bottom line: You cannot save a partial online application, so have everything ready before you begin. The phone line is the easiest route if you prefer to talk someone through it.
Apply by phone, online, or post
- Phone (recommended): Call the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234 (free, MonβFri 8amβ6pm, Sat 8amβ4pm). An adviser completes the form with you.
- Online: Use the GOV.UK Pension Credit calculator first to estimate your entitlement, then apply at gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim.
- Post: Request a paper form (PC1) from the claim line and return it by post β allow extra processing time.
Backdating: Claims can be backdated by up to three months β so you will receive arrears even if you applied late.
| Route | Time to process | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | ~5 weeks | Those who prefer guidance |
| Online | ~5 weeks | Confident with digital forms |
| Post | ~8 weeks | No internet access |
Bottom line: The three-month backdating rule means there is no financial penalty for a modest delay β but do not wait indefinitely.

What happens after you apply
- The DWP will contact you to confirm details and may ask for documents (bank statements, pension letters).
- Once approved, payments go directly into your bank or building society account every four weeks.
- Report any change in circumstances (income, savings, housing costs, partner's situation) promptly β underpayments and overpayments both cause headaches.
Bottom line: Once in payment, Pension Credit is reviewed periodically but largely runs automatically β the main obligation is to report changes.
