Quick facts

  • Non-itemizer deduction: $1,000 single / $2,000 married filing jointly, cash gifts only, from tax year 2026
  • Itemizer floor: only gifts above 0.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI) count, from 2026
  • 2026 standard deduction: $16,100 single / $32,200 married filing jointly
  • IRA route (QCD): age 70ยฝ or older, up to $108,000 per person for 2025, indexed each year

For the first time since 2021, Americans who take the standard deduction can write off charitable gifts again.

The change comes from the 2025 tax law and applies to the return you file in early 2027 for the 2026 tax year.

Donations are in the news because Washington is questioning the tax-exempt status of some private colleges.

It is a reminder that the deduction depends on where the money goes, not just that you gave.

Three routes lead to a charity deduction in 2026, and most people qualify for one

Route 1 applies if you take the standard deduction

Roughly nine in ten filers take the standard deduction rather than itemizing.

Starting with 2026, those filers can deduct up to $1,000 in cash gifts, or $2,000 on a joint return, on top of the standard deduction.

Only cash counts: checks, cards, and bank transfers to a qualifying public charity.

Gifts to donor-advised funds and most private foundations do not qualify for this new deduction.

Route 2 is for itemizers, and it now has a floor

If your mortgage interest, state taxes, and gifts add up to more than the standard deduction, you itemize on Schedule A.

New for 2026: only the portion of your gifts above 0.5% of AGI is deductible.

On a $100,000 income, the first $500 of giving earns nothing.

A $3,000 gift yields a $2,500 deduction.

Cash gifts remain deductible up to 60% of AGI, appreciated stock up to 30%, with unused amounts carried forward five years.

Top-bracket taxpayers face one more trim.

Itemized deductions are now worth at most 35 cents per dollar, even in the 37% bracket.

The new rules reward steady, documented cash giving โ€” and quietly punish the receipt you never asked for.

Route 3 skips the deduction entirely if you are 70ยฝ or older

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) sends money straight from your IRA to a charity.

The withdrawal never appears in your taxable income, so it works whether or not you itemize, and the 0.5% floor does not apply.

The limit was $108,000 per person for 2025 and is indexed for inflation each year.

From age 73, a QCD also counts toward your required minimum distribution.

For retirees whose Social Security taxation or Medicare premiums hinge on income, keeping the withdrawal off the return is often worth more than any deduction.

Route Who What counts Limit
Non-itemizer deduction Standard-deduction filers Cash to public charities $1,000 single / $2,000 joint
Itemized (Schedule A) Deductions above $16,100 / $32,200 Cash, stock, property 60% of AGI, less the 0.5% floor
QCD IRA owners 70ยฝ and up Direct IRA-to-charity transfer $108,000 for 2025, indexed

Paperwork is where most deductions fail

Any single gift of $250 or more needs a written acknowledgment from the charity, dated before you file.

Bank records alone cover smaller cash gifts, but a cancelled check is not enough at $250.

Non-cash gifts over $500 require Form 8283.

Over $5,000, you usually need a qualified appraisal.

Bottom line: confirm the organization is on the IRS list before you give. Donations to a group that has lost its exempt status are not deductible, however worthy the cause.
