Active noise cancellation fights sound with more sound.
A microphone on the earbud samples the noise around you. A chip builds an inverted copy of that wave in microseconds.
The speaker plays the copy into your ear canal. The two waves collide and mostly cancel, and the rumble drops away.
That is the entire trick. No vacuum, no insulation, no magic.
ANC kills the drone, not the conversation
Noise cancellation works on steady, low-frequency sound.
Airplane cabin drone. Subway rumble. Highway tire hum. A window air conditioner.
Those sounds repeat in a predictable pattern, and a predictable wave is easy to model and invert.
Human speech is not predictable. It jumps in pitch, stops, restarts, and sits mostly above 1,000 Hz.
That is why office chatter still leaks through a $329 earbud. Product pages rarely say this part out loud.
Every ANC earbud runs the same three parts
The first part is microphones.
Feed-forward mics face outward and sample noise before it reaches your ear.
Feedback mics sit inside the canal and check what actually got through.
Sony's WF-1000XM6, released February 12, 2026, carries four mics per bud.
The second part is the processor, which Sony calls the QN3e. Every brand has its own name for the same job.
The third part is timing. The chip has about a millisecond to hear, invert, and play.
Cancellation is a race against the sound wave, and the wave already has a head start.
A subway car runs near 90 decibels
Good earbuds cut steady low-frequency noise by roughly 20 to 25 decibels.
Decibels are logarithmic, so 22 dB off is not a quarter quieter.
It lands closer to a fifth of the perceived loudness. That gap is why people say the noise "steps back" instead of disappearing.
The rubber tip matters more than the chip
ANC handles the low frequencies. The eartip handles the high ones.
That physical seal is called passive isolation, and no processor replaces it.
A loose tip leaks bass, and the circuit then chases a moving target.
Sony ships several tip sizes because fit genuinely varies by ear shape.
Try each size, and pick the one that dulls the room before you switch ANC on.
Cheaper models cancel less, and the gap shows up in exactly these places.
Anker's Soundcore Liberty 5, at $129.99, is openly weaker than flagships on a plane or a subway platform.
Transparency mode is the same hardware, reversed
Instead of inverting outside noise, the buds amplify it and pipe it in. Same mics, same chip, opposite sign.
Use it at crosswalks, in airports, and anywhere someone is talking to you.
One limit is worth stating plainly: ANC does not protect your hearing.
It lowers the background, which lets you turn the volume down โ but only if you actually do.
