Over-ear cancellation is a solved problem at the top of the market. What remains unsettled is which trade you should make to get it.
The three below differ by roughly 19 hours of battery, by 30 grams, and by whether the case fits in hand luggage. Choose the axis that applies to you.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5 โ best for most people

Eight microphones and a dedicated processor aimed at low frequencies is what puts this first. Reviewer consensus places it at or near the top of its class for engine drone and tunnel roar, and an Amazon rating of 4.4 across a review count in the forty-thousands suggests the consensus is not a shallow one.
Thirty hours covers a long-haul return with the transfers at either end. LDAC and multipoint are both present, so a phone and a laptop stay connected simultaneously.
The successor has arrived and the price has fallen accordingly. That is a reason to buy now rather than a reason to look elsewhere.
The drawback: it does not fold. The XM4's cups folded inwards; the XM5 merely lies flat, so the case is bulky and full hand luggage notices. Being a generation old also puts it on an eventual path to discontinuation, and readers with smaller heads mention headband pressure repeatedly.

2. Soundcore Space One โ best if you are watching the price
Battery42 h 57 min measured, ANC onFast charge5 min โ 4 hWeight265 gCodecsLDAC, AAC, SBCDrivers40 mm
This costs roughly a quarter of the other two and holds the longest battery in the group while doing it. Anker claims 40 hours with cancellation on; SoundGuys measured 42 hours and 57 minutes, which is the uncommon case of a tested figure beating the printed one.
Five minutes at a socket returns four hours of playback. That matters precisely once โ at the gate, after boarding has been called โ and it is worth more there than most premium features are anywhere.
LDAC and multipoint both survive at this price, which is unusual at the budget end.
The drawback: the tuning leans heavily on the bass, crowding the middle and upper registers in a way the app equaliser only partly addresses. The build feels its price, and the hinge is named as the likely long-term failure point โ relevant if you fold them twice daily.

3. Bose QuietComfort โ best when comfort and packing decide it
Battery24 h, ANC onWeight235 gFast charge15 min โ 2.5 hCaseFolding cups, hard shellCodecsSBC, AAC
At 235 grams this is the lightest of the three, and weight is exactly what a five-hour flight punishes. Comfort across long sessions is the point reviewers return to most often here.
It is also the only pair whose cups fold. The hard-shell case that results takes appreciably less room than the Sony's, which is the clearest single separation between the two.
Fifteen minutes of charging returns two and a half hours โ enough to rescue a flight boarded with a flat battery.
The drawback: 24 hours is the shortest battery of the three, and codec support stops at SBC and AAC. There is no aptX Adaptive, no CustomTune and no spatial mode; those sit in the pricier Ultra. This is not the pair you choose on specifications.

Questions people ask
Does paying three times as much buy three times the quiet?
No. The gap is real but narrow, and it shows up in the loudest, most variable cabins. Against steady engine drone the cheapest pair here removes most of what the expensive ones do.
Over-ear or in-ear?
Over-ear wins on low-frequency noise because the cup isolates physically before the electronics begin. We set out both cases in over-ear vs in-ear noise cancelling.
Do the codecs on the specification sheet matter?
Less than the tuning does. Bluetooth codecs explained covers why LDAC rarely decides how a pair of headphones sounds.
