Over-ear wins the flight; in-ear wins everything else you carry
Both types cancel noise. They fail in different places.
An over-ear cup seals around the ear and puts a physical barrier in front of the electronics.
An in-ear tip seals inside the canal instead, and then disappears into a coat pocket.
The honest question is not which cancels better. It is how long you wear them in one sitting.
Cancellation handles the drone; the seal handles everything else
Active cancellation is very good at steady low-frequency noise and poor at almost everything else.
Aeroplane and train drone sits low, roughly 80-200Hz, which is exactly the band the technology was built for.
A tannoy announcement, a crying child, a colleague on a call โ those are broadband, and they largely survive.
What removes them is the passive seal, and a cup around the ear seals across a wider range than a tip inside it.
That is why over-ear models still feel quieter on a long-haul flight even when an earbud measures well on a bench.
The tip has its own advantage. It sits far closer to the eardrum, and blocks high frequencies a cup leaks.
Neither wins outright. They are quiet in different parts of the spectrum.
One practical warning: if the tip does not seal properly, the cancellation collapses altogether.
Work through the other tip sizes in the box before concluding a set is faulty.
Battery is the one difference nobody argues about
The Sony WH-1000XM5 runs about 30 hours with cancelling on. The Bose QuietComfort Headphones manage roughly 24.
Earbuds are on a different scale entirely.
The Sony WF-1000XM6 gives about 8 hours in the buds, with roughly 24 more waiting in the case.
Soundcore's Liberty 5 is much the same: eight hours running, around 32 in total.
So over-ear covers a return flight to the Gulf on a single charge. Buds cover the outbound leg, then need the case.
On a 40-minute commute that distinction is meaningless. On a night flight it is the entire argument.
The case is not a charger you happened to bring โ it is the second half of the battery, and it has to be with you.
Comfort and packing decide it after the third hour
Weight matters less than pressure. The XM5 is 250g and the Bose 235g, both light for the class.
What tires people is clamp force against the sides of the head, and the arms of glasses sit directly under it.
If you wear glasses all day, try the cups on over your frames rather than trusting a review.
Hearing aids are the clearer case. Over-ear cups accommodate most behind-the-ear devices; in-ear tips generally do not.
Heat is the other three-hour problem. Leather-effect earpads warm up in a way silicone tips never do.
Packing runs the other way. The Bose folds flat into a hard case; the Sony only swivels, and its case is bulky.
An earbud case fits in a jacket pocket, which is why plenty of over-ear owners quietly keep a set of buds too.
The two price bands barely overlap
These are approximate street prices, and they move constantly.
Over-ear flagships sit around ยฃ250-300, with the XM5 discounted below its launch price for much of 2026.
Flagship earbuds are no cheaper. The WF-1000XM6 lands near ยฃ300 for a fraction of the endurance.
The value case is at the bottom of the range, where Liberty 5 buds are about ยฃ110 with IP55 sweat resistance.
Neither Sony nor Bose offers that rating, which matters if your commute involves a hill.

Buy over-ear if your longest session is a flight or a desk. Buy in-ear if it is a walk, a gym or a bus.
Whichever you pick, cancelling is not a licence to raise the volume โ it exists so you can lower it.
