Most manufacturers say six to twelve months. That figure assumes an average home running the machine part-time.
Almost nobody runs one part-time once they have bought it.
Two things decide the real interval: how dirty your air is, and how many hours a day the fan turns.
The stated interval is a lab number, not a schedule
Levoit quotes six to eight months on the Vital 200S-P. Blueair quotes up to nine on the Blue Pure 311i Max.
Both assume roughly twelve hours a day in a household without particular problems.
A cat or a dog roughly halves it. Hair and dander load the pre-filter far faster than dust does.
Cigarette smoke, a wood burner or an open kitchen halves it again, and does most of its damage to the carbon.
Running the unit continuously, as most people end up doing, compresses a nine-month filter into five or six.
Pollen season is the seasonal spike. A filter that coasted through January can be visibly grey by June.
The reverse is also true. A spare bedroom on the lowest setting may genuinely reach twelve months.
The change-filter light is a timer, so ignore it and look
This is the single most useful thing to know about these machines.
That indicator is counting fan hours, not measuring anything. It has no idea what is on the filter.
So it will light up on schedule whether the cartridge is black or nearly clean.
More importantly, it will stay dark while a filter fails early in a smoky or hairy house.
A filter light that has never surprised you is not monitoring your air โ it is counting down a clock set in a factory.
Pull the cartridge out every couple of months and look at it under a decent light.
A pale pre-filter with even greying is fine. Matted hair, felted dust or a uniform dark grey is not.
Then smell it. Carbon exhaustion is easier to detect by nose than by eye.
The other tell is airflow. If the machine is louder at the same setting, or the output feels weaker, it is working against a blockage.
Combined cartridges fail on the carbon layer first
Most mid-range purifiers now use a single cylinder holding three layers: pre-filter, HEPA, and activated carbon.
Convenient to fit, and slightly dishonest, because those three layers do not wear out at the same rate.
The HEPA layer is mechanical. It gets better at trapping fine particles as it loads, until airflow suffers.
Activated carbon is chemical. It adsorbs odours until its surface is saturated, and then it simply stops.
On a Vital 200S-P run hard, that point arrives around six months โ well before the HEPA layer is spent.
The symptom is specific: particle readings stay good, but cooking smells and pet odour start lingering again.
You cannot replace one layer, so the carbon sets the schedule for the whole cartridge.

Washing the wrong layer ruins the filter for good
A washable pre-filter is not a washable HEPA, and the marketing rarely makes that clear.
The pre-filter is the coarse mesh or fabric sleeve on the outside. Vacuum it monthly, rinse it if the manual allows, dry it completely.
Doing that reliably adds months to the cartridge underneath, and costs nothing.
Never wash a HEPA layer. Water swells and separates the pleated fibres, and the filter never recovers its rating.
A damp HEPA layer is also a growing medium, which is a worse outcome than a dirty one.
Vacuuming a HEPA surface is almost as bad, because the brush head tears the fibre structure.
On running costs, budget roughly ยฃ40-45 a year per machine, plus about 32W of electricity on a mid setting.
That is a few pounds a year to run and rather more to feed, which is the part most buyers underestimate.
