The noise underneath it is. Sony's answer to that noise sits at a US list price of $329.99, or approximately Ā£300 here ā enough to warrant a careful look.
The verdict, before the detail
This is the most effective noise cancellation currently sold in a pair of earbuds, and it is still worth waiting for a discount rather than paying list.
The street price has moved a good deal since launch ā check what it costs today.
The WF-1000XM6 arrived on 12 February 2026. Sony built it around a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor, the QN3e, which the company says runs three times faster than the chip in the XM5.
That speed is the whole argument. Cancellation works by producing an opposing waveform, and a faster processor produces a more accurate one against noise that keeps shifting.
Five numbers decide whether the money makes sense.

That is a manufacturer's figure, so take it as a direction of travel rather than a measurement. It is broadly consistent with what reviewers report on aircraft and in deep tunnels.
Low, steady sound is what cancellation handles best ā engine rumble, tunnel roar, the drone of a bus. Which is most of what a commute consists of.
Eight hours with cancellation on, twenty-four with the case
Eight hours covers a working day of near-continuous listening without a mid-afternoon trip back to the case.
With cancellation off the buds manage twelve hours, and the case takes the total to thirty-six. Few people need that, though the headroom means a forgotten charge rarely matters.
Four microphones per earbud is a call-quality figure
Eight microphones across the pair, plus bone-conduction sensing, is the difference between a call taken on a windy pavement and one the other party keeps asking you to repeat.
Cancellation and call clarity are separate problems. A good many earbuds solve the first and not the second.
The feature set does not change when the phone does
Sony offers the same app, equaliser and adaptive modes on iOS and Android alike.
That matters rather more than it sounds if you expect to change handset during the four or five years these should last.

Two drawbacks worth knowing
The case is thicker, and a pocket notices
Reviewers keep returning to this. The case is bulkier than the XM5's and its corners are squared off.
Earbuds live in a pocket all day. A case that refuses to sit flat is a genuine irritation, not a spec-sheet quibble.
A poor seal costs you the thing you paid for
Ear shapes vary, and some people must swap the tips before the buds seal properly.
If the seal is off, cancellation falls away with it. The most expensive feature in the box is also the one most sensitive to fit.
Who this suits
A good fit if you
- Commute daily by train, bus or Underground, where low-frequency noise dominates
- Take calls outdoors and need to be heard clearly
- Expect to move between iPhone and Android over the product's life
Look elsewhere if you
- Want something you can rinse under a tap ā IPX4 copes with sweat and drizzle, not water
- Care more about value for money than about the best cancellation available

The US list price is $329.99, and paying the equivalent is optional. The first discount came in March 2026, and by June the US price had reached $265.99.

Questions people ask before buying
Is it worth upgrading from the XM5?
If your XM5 still holds a charge, probably not at full price. The gains are real but incremental, and the XM5 remains a strong pair.
At a heavily discounted price the sums change, particularly if call quality matters to you.
Is the Sony actually worth two and a half times the Anker?
That depends almost entirely on where you listen. We ran the two against each other in flagship versus mid-price earbuds, and the short answer is that the gap narrows sharply outside aircraft and deep tunnels.
Can I wear them in the rain or at the gym?
Sweat and light rain are fine at IPX4. Rinsing them under a tap is not. Treat IPX4 as splash tolerance rather than waterproofing.
