What is active noise cancellation? The physics behind the quiet

Active noise cancellation is a small speaker playing the exact opposite of the noise around you.

The two waves meet in your ear canal and largely cancel each other out.

The engine drone of an aircraft cabin fades. The rumble of a Northern line carriage drops away.

That is the whole trick. Everything after it is refinement.

The phrase now appears on almost every set of earbuds sold above ยฃ80, and is almost never explained.

The earbud listens to the noise, then plays its mirror image

On the outside of each earbud sits a microphone, sampling the noise reaching you thousands of times a second.

A processor calculates the inverse of that waveform โ€” the same shape, flipped upside down.

A second speaker plays that inverse into your ear alongside whatever you were listening to.

Peak meets trough. Much of the noise is gone before your eardrum registers it.

Better designs add a third microphone inside the ear canal, which checks the result and corrects the error in real time.

Sony's WF-1000XM6, released on 12 February 2026, runs four microphones per earbud through exactly that loop.

It cancels drones, not voices

The system has to predict the next fraction of a wave, so it needs sound that is steady and repetitive.

Engine hum, road roar, air conditioning, the rumble of rolling stock โ€” all of it sits low and repeats.

Speech does not. It is higher, irregular, and full of sudden consonants the processor cannot see coming.

So the colleague two desks away survives cancellation almost entirely intact.

It is also why a platform announcement still reaches you while the train itself disappears.

Noise cancelling removes the world's background hum. It was never designed to remove the person talking at you.

The rubber seal does more work than the electronics

Passive isolation โ€” the physical seal of the eartip โ€” blocks the higher frequencies that cancellation cannot touch.

Lose the seal and you lose both halves of the effect at once.

Ear canals vary enormously in shape, and fit is where otherwise excellent earbuds quietly fail.

Sony's flagship is one of several where owners report that the seal depends heavily on the ear it is in.

Work through the supplied tip sizes properly rather than assuming the medium ones are correct.

Most earbuds now include a fit test in their companion app, which takes about thirty seconds.

The real health argument is volume, not silence

On a loud train, people raise the volume until the music wins.

Strip twenty-odd decibels of rumble out of the background and the comfortable listening level drops with it.

The World Health Organization's guidance for personal audio devices is built around 80 dB averaged over 40 hours a week.

Quieter listening for longer is the point, and it is the argument for cancellation that has nothing to do with comfort.

What changes between ยฃ130 and ยฃ330

Cancellation depth is the headline difference, and it is genuinely real.

Anker's Soundcore Liberty 5, roughly ยฃ110โ€“ยฃ130 on the UK high street as an approximate street price, handles a bus well and the Underground noticeably less well.

Sony's flagship, around ยฃ300 approximate, holds far more of the low end together.

Battery is the second cost of the feature. The Liberty 5 quotes 8 hours in the buds with cancellation on and 32 hours including the case.

Switch it off and Anker's figures rise to 12 and 48. Cancellation is a chip and a microphone array running continuously, and it is not free.

Sony quotes 8 hours in the buds and 24 hours with the case, cancellation on.

If you mostly listen at home, you are paying for a feature you will rarely switch on.

If you take the Underground five mornings a week, it is the one you will notice every single day.
