Transparency mode puts a window in the seal rather than removing it
A sealed earphone is a wall.
Transparency mode does not take the wall down. It puts a window in it.
Microphones on the outside of the earcup pick up the room, and the drivers play that back to you almost immediately.
You are still wearing a plug. You are simply hearing through it.
It is the same set of microphones that active noise cancellation uses, pointed at the opposite job.
Every manufacturer calls it something different
The feature is near-universal on anything with cancellation, and almost nobody agrees on what to call it.

The names differ. The function underneath does not.
Where sets genuinely differ is in how convincing the result sounds, and that comes down to timing.
Latency separates a natural one from a hollow one
Sound reaches your eardrum by two routes at once.
Some of it leaks physically through and around the seal, at the speed of sound.
The rest travels in through a microphone, through a processor, and back out of a driver.
If the electronic path lags the leaked path by even a fraction of a millisecond, the two copies interfere with each other.
That interference is the thin, slightly metallic voice that cheap transparency modes are known for.
The mark of a good transparency mode is that you stop noticing it, and shortly afterwards forget you are wearing anything at all.
Good implementations keep the whole round trip well under a millisecond, which is harder than it sounds and is most of what the money buys.
Hiss is the second giveaway. Amplifying a quiet room also amplifies the microphones' own noise floor.
In a silent bedroom, a mediocre set sounds faintly like a shower running two doors away.
It helps most with your own voice
Seal an ear and your own voice turns boomy and internal.
That is the occlusion effect โ the same sensation as sticking a finger in one ear and humming.
It is also why people wearing earbuds tend to talk too loudly.
Transparency feeds your voice back in by the outside route, and most of the boom disappears.
Conversation at a counter is what the mode is genuinely good at. So is catching a platform announcement.
Most sets now offer a voice-focused variant that ducks the music the moment you start speaking.
Direction and wind are the two things it cannot manage
Transparency does not restore normal hearing, and direction is the first casualty.
The folds of your outer ear shape sound before it arrives, and a microphone mounted on the outside of an earcup skips that stage entirely.
Left and right survive. Front and behind blur โ which matters rather more on a bicycle than at a desk.
Wind is the second. Microphones dislike it, and most sets quietly reduce or mute transparency once it picks up.
The Highway Code does not ban headphones for cyclists or pedestrians, though it does warn drivers that loud music can mask sounds that matter.

Adaptive modes now switch between cancellation and transparency on their own, reading movement and ambient level.
They are convenient rather than clever, and all of them can be overridden with a button when they guess wrongly.

Naturalness is, in the end, the only thing worth judging a transparency mode on.
