What spatial audio actually does, and why head tracking is the part that works

Spatial audio is a mix in which each sound is placed at a point in three-dimensional space rather than assigned to a left or a right channel.

A renderer then works out what that arrangement would sound like arriving at two ears, and plays you the result.

The technical name for the fold-down is binaural rendering, and it leans on a measurement of how your head and outer ears colour sound arriving from different directions.

That measurement is the reason the effect is convincing on one person and oddly flat on another.

Stereo lives between your ears; spatial audio is trying to get out of your head

Ordinary stereo puts a singer in the middle by sending the same signal to both ears at the same instant.

Your brain reads that as a source somewhere inside your skull, because no real sound behaves that way.

Spatial audio adds the small delays, level differences and frequency shaping that a real source in a real room would produce.

The stage moves outward and, on a good mix, slightly forward.

Head tracking is the trick, and it is a gyroscope

Turn your head while wearing ordinary headphones and the entire band turns with you.

That is the giveaway your brain uses to decide the sound is not really there.

Head-tracked spatial audio puts motion sensors in the earcups and rotates the rendered field in the opposite direction as you move.

Turn to the left, and the singer stays put where the phone or the laptop is.

It is a small thing described on paper and an obvious one within about five seconds of hearing it.

The cost is a little battery, and a brief wobble while the tracker re-centres if you lie down.

Turn your head and the stage stays where the screen is โ€” that single detail does more than any amount of extra channels.

Three formats, and the fussiest one is Apple's

The format decides where the mix comes from. The hardware decides whether you get head tracking on top of it.

The important line in that table is the middle column of the third row.

Dolby Atmos and Sony's format render on the phone and arrive at the headphones as ordinary stereo, so no special codec and no special hardware is required.

Head tracking is the only part that genuinely needs sensors in the cups, and manufacturers gate it to their own models.

Bose takes a different route again on the QuietComfort Ultra line, upmixing plain stereo on the headphone itself, which means it works with any source at all.

Most spatial music is an upmix, and it shows

A genuine object-based mix is made by an engineer placing individual stems in a three-dimensional field.

Far more of the catalogue has simply been widened by software from an existing stereo master.

Upmixes tend to sound airier and slightly hollow in the middle, with the vocal pushed back rather than moved out.

Recordings from before about 2000 fare worst, because the original multitrack often no longer exists in a usable state.

If a favourite album sounds thinner in Atmos than in stereo, that is not your headphones failing. The mix is doing it.

Film gains more than music does

Film and television were mixed for a room full of speakers in the first place, so the spatial version is recovering something that was always there.

Dialogue stays anchored to the screen, effects move across it, and head tracking keeps all of it from swinging about when you shift on the sofa.

Music was mixed for two speakers, and the spatial version is an interpretation rather than a restoration.

Try it on a film first. If the effect does nothing for you there, it will do less on an album.
