The 60/60 Rule: How Loud Is Too Loud in Headphones

The 60/60 rule says listen at no more than 60 percent of your phone's maximum volume, for no more than 60 minutes at a stretch.

It is a rule of thumb, not a law of physics.

But it is a decent stand-in for a number that is genuinely hard to measure at home.

That number is 85 decibels over eight hours โ€” the exposure limit US occupational researchers settled on decades ago.

Volume and time trade against each other

Hearing risk is not about loudness alone. It is loudness multiplied by duration.

At 85 dB, the accepted safe window is about eight hours.

Raise the level by 3 dB and that window is cut in half.

So 88 dB buys you four hours. 91 dB buys two.

A busy city street sits around 85 dB. A subway car can hit 95 dB.

Headphones at full tilt on a modern phone reach 100 dB or more.

At that level the safe window is measured in minutes.

Why 60 percent, and why it is only approximate

Phone volume sliders are not calibrated to decibels, and no two devices map the same way.

On many recent phones and tablets, the halfway mark lands somewhere in the mid-70s dB.

Sixty percent is a conservative guess that keeps most combinations under 85.

It is not a guarantee, because the headphone matters as much as the slider.

A high-impedance studio pair and a pair of cheap earbuds fed the same signal produce very different levels.

If someone an arm's length away has to raise their voice for you to hear them, you are too loud.

That conversational test is cruder than a meter and far more useful than a percentage.

The real fix is usually the background, not the volume

People turn headphones up for one reason above all others: to bury noise.

On a plane, a train, or a treadmill, the background is already 75 to 85 dB.

To hear music over that, you push another 10 or 15 dB on top.

This is the strongest practical argument for noise cancelling. It lets you listen quieter, not louder.

Over-ear cups and well-sealed tips do some of the same work passively.

Bottom line: Noise-induced hearing loss is gradual, painless, and permanent. It does not announce itself, which is why a rule of thumb beats waiting to notice.

Both iOS and Android now log your actual headphone exposure in decibels and will warn you when a week's worth crosses the limit.

That readout is worth checking once. Most people are surprised by it in one direction or the other.
