Indoor humidity has a target band, and it is 30 to 50 percent
Most household guidance converges on the same range: keep indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50%.
The band exists because the problems at each end are different problems.
Below 30%, the air pulls moisture out of whatever it touches โ skin, sinuses, wood floors, the back of your throat at 4 a.m.
Above 50%, the air holds enough moisture for other things to live in it.
Dust mites need roughly 50% to thrive. Mold generally needs sustained moisture above 60%.
Neither failure announces itself. You notice the symptom months before you suspect the number.
The green band is the target. A heated house in January usually sits to the left of it.
Relative humidity moves when the temperature does
The word doing the work in "relative humidity" is relative.
It describes how much water the air is holding against the maximum it could hold at that temperature.
Warm air can hold far more. So heating cold outdoor air without adding water drives the percentage down, even though not a drop was removed.
That is the whole mechanism behind dry winter air.
Outdoor air at 30ยฐF and 70% relative humidity, warmed to 70ยฐF indoors, lands somewhere near 15%.
Your furnace did not dry the house out. It changed the denominator.
The same logic runs backwards in August, which is why a humid basement is a summer problem and never a January one.
Heating a house does not remove water from the air; it raises the amount the air is able to hold, and the percentage falls to meet it.
Guessing is the expensive option
Almost nobody can feel the difference between 28% and 38%.
People can feel the consequences โ static shocks, a dry cough, a piano that will not hold tune โ but those arrive late and point at several causes.
A digital hygrometer costs about $12 and settles it in an afternoon.
Put it at seated height, away from the humidifier, away from a vent, and away from an exterior wall.
Readings taken next to the mist outlet describe the mist, not the room.
Check it twice: once in the morning before the heat cycles hard, once at night.
If the number holds under 30% through a cold snap, that is when a humidifier earns its place.
If it holds above 55% in a finished basement, the appliance you need is a dehumidifier, and running a humidifier upstairs will not change that.
Chasing the top of the band is a mistake
There is a temptation to aim at 45% or 50% for comfort.
In an older house with single-pane or aluminum-framed windows, that number condenses on the glass overnight.
Condensation on a window sill is a mold site, and it is fed by the appliance you bought to feel better.
The colder the outside, the lower the ceiling your windows will tolerate.
At around 0ยฐF outside, many houses cannot hold much above 25% without wetting the glass.
A practical approach is to target the low 30s in deep winter and let it drift toward 45% in milder weather.
If the windows fog, the number is too high for that house on that night, whatever the guidance says.
Most humidifiers with a built-in humidistat will hold a set point on their own.
