That is the EPA's interval, and it is the single habit that matters most.

A humidifier sprays whatever is growing in its tank
Ultrasonic models work by vibrating water into a fine mist at high frequency.
The vibration does not filter anything. It aerosolises the tank's contents as they are.
Bacteria, mineral dust, and biofilm all leave the machine along with the water.
That is why standing water is the problem rather than a cosmetic annoyance.
Warm-mist units boil instead, which kills more in the water but bakes scale onto the heating element.
Either way, the tank gets scrubbed on the same schedule.
The three-day reset takes about five minutes
Unplug the unit first, every time.
Pour out any remaining water โ do not top up a partly full tank, ever.
Rinse the tank and refill it with about an inch of clean water.
Scrub the interior with a soft bottle brush, paying attention to the corners and the neck.
Wipe the base reservoir where the mist is generated, since that is where film forms first.
Dry every surface with a clean cloth and leave the cap off until the inside is genuinely dry.
Pink or slimy film is not mineral residue โ it is bacterial growth, and rinsing alone will not remove it.
That pink tint is usually Serratia marcescens, a common airborne bacterium that thrives in wet plastic.
It needs mechanical scrubbing plus an acid soak, not a quick rinse.
Black or grey speckling in the same spots is mould, and it gets the same treatment.
White vinegar is the weekly step, and it needs contact time
Fill the tank with a solution of about one part white vinegar to three parts water.
Let it sit 20 to 30 minutes so the acid can dissolve calcium carbonate.
For a warm-mist unit, pour undiluted vinegar over the heating element and leave it the same time.
Then scrub, and rinse until you cannot smell vinegar at all.
Residual acid in the tank ends up in the mist.
Bottom line: Do not leave bleach sitting in a humidifier tank, and never run the unit with any cleaning solution still in it. Rinse to plain water first.
Cleanability varies more between models than the marketing suggests
RTINGS scores the Levoit Classic 300S at 6.0 for cleaning, with a 6 L tank and no dishwasher-safe parts.
The Levoit LV600S scores 4.5, with close to 20 separate parts that need periodic washing and none of them dishwasher safe.
Neither is unusual โ dishwasher heat warps most humidifier plastics, so manufacturers rarely certify them.
The practical takeaway is that part count predicts how often you will actually do this.
