If you keep nudging the volume up on the train, the volume was never the problem.
The noise underneath it is. Sony's answer to that noise carries a $329.99 list price, which is enough money to deserve a straight look.
The verdict, before the details
This is the most effective noise cancellation currently sold in a pair of earbuds, and most people should still buy it on sale rather than at list.
It has traded well below list this year โ check today's price before deciding.
The WF-1000XM6 launched on February 12, 2026. Sony builds it around a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor, the QN3e, which the company says runs three times faster than the chip in the XM5.
That speed is the whole argument. Cancellation works by generating an opposing waveform, and a faster processor generates a more accurate one against noise that keeps changing.
The five numbers below are what a buyer actually has to weigh.

Sony claims 25% more noise reduction than the XM5
That is a manufacturer figure, so treat it as direction rather than gospel. The direction is consistent with what reviewers report on aircraft and in subway tunnels.
Low, steady sound is what cancellation handles best โ engine rumble, tunnel roar, the drone of a bus. That is also most of what a commute is made of.
Eight hours with cancellation on, twenty-four with the case
Eight hours covers a workday of near-continuous listening without a mid-afternoon return to the case.
With cancellation off the buds run twelve hours, and the case pushes the total to thirty-six. Few people will need that, but the headroom means a forgotten charge is rarely a problem.
Four microphones per earbud is a call-quality spec, not a marketing one
Eight microphones across the pair, plus bone-conduction sensing, is what separates a call taken on a windy street from one the other party has to ask you to repeat.
Cancellation and call clarity are different jobs. Plenty of earbuds do the first well and the second poorly.
The features do not change when you change phones
Sony's feature set is the same on iPhone and on Android, including the app, the equalizer and the adaptive modes.
That matters more than it sounds if you expect to switch phones during the four or five years these will last.

The two drawbacks worth knowing
The case got thicker, and a front pocket notices
Reviewers return to this point repeatedly: the case is bulkier than the XM5's and its corners are squared off.
Earbuds live in a pocket all day. A case that does not sit flat is a real annoyance, not a spec-sheet quibble.
A poor seal costs you the thing you paid for
Ear shapes vary, and some people have to swap tips before the buds seal properly.
If the seal is off, cancellation drops with it. The most expensive feature in the box is the one most sensitive to fit.
Who this fits
This is a good fit if you
- Commute daily on a train, bus or subway where low-frequency noise dominates
- Take calls outdoors and need the other party to hear you cleanly
- Expect to switch between iPhone and Android over the product's life
Look elsewhere if you
- Want something you can rinse under a tap โ IPX4 handles sweat and drizzle, not water
- Care most about value per dollar rather than the best available cancellation
What to pay
List is $329.99, and paying it is optional. The first discount arrived in March 2026 at $298, and by June the price had reached $265.99.
Sony flagships follow this pattern reliably: the discount deepens after the first six months and again around major sales events.

Questions people ask before buying
Is the WF-1000XM6 worth the upgrade from the XM5?
If your XM5 still holds a charge, probably not at list price. The gains are real but incremental, and the XM5 remains strong.
At a $265 street price the calculation changes, particularly if call quality matters to you.
How much noise does active cancellation actually remove?
Far more low-frequency noise than high. Engine and tunnel rumble drop sharply; a nearby conversation drops much less. Our explainer on how ANC earbuds really work covers why the physics works out that way.
Can I wear them in the rain or at the gym?
Sweat and light rain are fine at IPX4. Rinsing them under a tap is not. Treat IPX4 as splash tolerance, not waterproofing.
