A factory reset wipes only the headphones' half.
The phone then presents a key that no longer matches anything, the headphones reject it, and you get "Connectingβ¦" followed by silence.
No error message appears, because as far as both devices are concerned nothing went wrong.
So the phone's record has to go first.
On iPhone: Settings, Bluetooth, the i beside the device, Forget This Device.
On Android: Settings, Connected devices, the gear icon, Unpair.
Do it on the tablet and the work laptop as well, not just the phone in your hand.

Modern headphones support multipoint, which means two devices can hold a live link at the same time.
A laptop that wakes for thirty seconds every hour will claim one of those two slots and never let go.
The headphones are not refusing to connect. They are already connected, to something in another room.

The reset is the power button held well past the point it feels wrong
There is no universal combination, but the patterns are few.
Most over-ear models want the power button held for 7 to 20 seconds while switched on and off charge. Several want power and volume-down together.
Sony and Bose both bury a reset in their companion app, which is quicker and harder to get wrong.
The confirmation is the light, not the timer.
Two colours flashing alternately means pairing mode. One colour, steady or slow, means the headset is merely switched on.
If you only ever see one colour, you have not reset it yet, whatever the manual said about ten seconds.
A full pairing list drops the device you want without telling you
Most headsets remember around eight devices and evict the oldest when a ninth arrives.
A pair that has been through a car, a games console, two laptops and a hotel television will have quietly forgotten your phone.
That is the one fault a factory reset genuinely fixes, because it empties the list.
Low battery causes a similar silence.
Below roughly 20%, some models will power on and play but refuse to enter pairing mode at all.
Charge for half an hour before concluding anything.
If it connects but sounds wrong, the profile is the problem
Bluetooth audio runs two separate profiles, and a headset can connect on the wrong one.
Stereo playback uses one. The microphone uses another, at telephone quality.
On Windows the same headphones appear twice in the sound menu, listed as Stereo and Hands-Free.
Pick Stereo for music, and expect the sound to collapse the moment an app decides it wants the microphone.
Firmware is the last thing to check, and the least glamorous.
Manufacturers do ship genuine pairing fixes in point updates. The app cannot apply one while the headphones are refusing to connect, so fix the pairing first and update straight afterwards.
