A humidistat is a thermostat for water vapor.
It reads the relative humidity of the air, compares that reading to a number you set, and switches a humidifier on or off accordingly.
Thermostat, set point, on, off. Same logic, different quantity.
The word shows up on humidifier boxes as auto mode, smart mode, or target humidity, and all three mean the same component.
The sensor decides whether the number means anything
Inside the unit is a small capacitive sensor.
Two plates hold a film between them that absorbs water from the air.
Absorbed water changes the film's capacitance, the circuit reads that change, and firmware converts it to a percentage.
The percentage is relative humidity, meaning how much water the air holds against the maximum it could hold at that temperature.
Relative is the load-bearing word.
Cool the same air by ten degrees and the reading climbs, even though not a single molecule of water was added.
A humidistat does not measure water in your room. It measures how close your room is to raining.
It is a switch, not a throttle
Most humidistats do not modulate output the way a dimmer modulates a lamp.
They run the humidifier at its current fan speed until the set point is reached, then cut power.
Humidity drifts down, crosses a lower boundary, and the unit starts again.
That boundary gap is called the deadband, usually three to five percentage points.
Without it the machine would chatter on and off every few seconds around the target.
So a unit set to 45 percent is really cycling somewhere between roughly 42 and 45.

Built-in sensors read the mist, not the room
The sensor in a tabletop humidifier sits on the machine, often within inches of the mist nozzle.
It reads the humid microclimate the machine itself created.
The display says 50 percent while the far side of the bedroom sits at 35.
Two habits fix most of that gap.
Keep the unit off the floor and away from walls, so air circulates around the sensor.
Then put an independent hygrometer near the bed and trust that number instead.
A separate reading also tells you when the built-in sensor has drifted, which they do as dust collects on the film.

Whole-house humidistats live on the furnace
A ducted humidifier puts its humidistat in the return duct or on a wall alongside the thermostat.
It can only add moisture while the furnace blower is running, since it needs airflow to carry the vapor.
Older mechanical versions use a nylon ribbon or a strip of human hair that stretches as it absorbs water and trips a contact.
They are less precise than a capacitive sensor and they wander over the years, but they need no power to sense.
Some outdoor-compensating models lower the target automatically as the outside temperature drops.
That is a condensation guard, not a comfort feature, because warm humid air against a cold window turns into water on the sill.
What a humidistat will not do
It cannot remove humidity unless it is wired to a dehumidifier instead.
It will not detect a leaking tank, a clogged wick, or mineral scale on a nebulizer.
And it cannot tell the difference between air that is genuinely dry and a sensor buried under a season of dust.
