PM2.5 Is the Particle Small Enough to Get Past Your Nose

PM2.5 is a size, not a substance.

It means any airborne particle measuring 2.5 micrometers across or less, whatever it happens to be made of.

Soot, sulfates, road dust, condensed cooking oil, and wildfire char all qualify once they are small enough.

A human hair runs about 70 micrometers wide.

A PM2.5 particle is roughly one-thirtieth the width of a hair, which is exactly why your nose never catches it.

The size is the entire reason anyone regulates it

Your airway is built to trap debris. Nose hairs, mucus, and the branching of the bronchi strip out most of what you inhale.

That defense works well down to about 10 micrometers.

Below 2.5, particles follow the air rather than colliding with tissue, and they travel to the deepest part of the lung.

The EPA describes some of them as small enough to cross into the bloodstream from there.

That is the basis for the agency's health findings, which link PM2.5 exposure to cardiovascular and respiratory effects.

The practical version: you cannot feel it, filter it biologically, or smell most of it.

Haze is a clue, not a measurement. Plenty of high-PM2.5 days look ordinary.

The federal limits are lower than most people assume

The EPA sets two national standards for PM2.5, measured as micrograms per cubic meter of air.

The annual average standard was tightened to 9.0 µg/m³ in 2024, down from 12.0.

The 24-hour standard sits at 35 µg/m³.

The World Health Organization's guideline is stricter still, at 5 µg/m³ annually.

Annual PM2.5 limits in micrograms per cubic meter. The EPA number is enforceable in the US; the WHO number is advisory.

These are outdoor, regulatory averages. No one enforces anything inside your house.

The Air Quality Index is PM2.5 translated into a color

The AQI you see on a weather app is an index, not a concentration.

For PM2.5, the EPA converts micrograms into a 0-to-500 scale with fixed breakpoints.

0 to 50 is Good, and tops out at 9.0 µg/m³.

51 to 100 is Moderate, running to 35.4.

101 to 150 is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, running to 55.4, and that is where most agencies suggest limiting outdoor exertion.

A wildfire plume can push a metro area past 200 within a few hours, then clear overnight.

The index compresses a wide range, so the jump from 150 to 200 is a much larger change in actual particle load than 50 to 100.

Indoors, a filter is the only thing that removes it

Closing windows helps during a smoke event. It does nothing about the PM2.5 you generate yourself.

Frying, broiling, toasting, burning candles, and running a gas burner all produce fine particles in quantity.

Kitchen readings above 100 µg/m³ during a sear are routine, and they drop within an hour if air is actually being moved.

A range hood vented outdoors handles that better than anything else in the house.

For the rest, a HEPA filter is the mechanism. It is rated 99.97 percent at 0.3 micrometers, the hardest size to catch.

Particles larger and smaller than 0.3 are captured more easily, which puts most of the PM2.5 range comfortably inside a HEPA filter's strength.

That is also what a purifier's CADR rating measures, since one of its three test contaminants is smoke.

Match the CADR to the room and the machine clears fine particles several times an hour.

One caveat worth keeping: HEPA catches particles, not gases.

Carbon monoxide, radon, and volatile organic compounds pass straight through a particle filter, and none of them register on a PM2.5 reading.

PM2.5 is the one air-quality number worth learning, because it is the one your body has no defense against. Everything a purifier claims to do traces back to that single measurement.
